Watch a Supercut video of all the Visual Effects Oscar Winners
At Cinema Suite our goal is to provide affordable Cinematic Visual Effects software solutions and services to Game Designers and Independent Filmmakers. So naturally being VFX film fans and with the Oscars being on this Sunday we are interested to see which film will win for Best Visual Effects?
Do you remember who won last year, or the year before that? No, me neither, but the folks at Burger Fiction have been busy and created a supercut of all the winners in the Best Visual Effects category. While most films have stood the test of time in terms of effects some are looking a bit dodgy now like the Ten Commandments, okay so that was the 1956 winner. But it’s interesting to see the development of effects technology over the years and be reminded about some of the real breakthrough effects films [mainly from James Cameron] like The Abyss, Terminator 2 and Avatar.
So check out the video below and see how many of these Oscar winning films you have seen!
Motion Capture
Did you notice that a few of the VFX Oscar winners in the last ten or so years were for motion capture? Many of which were performances from Andy Serkis in the Lord of the Rings films, and King Kong. It’s amazing that motion capture technology is now available on your own computer; all you need is a Microsoft Kinect with our Cinema Mo Cap software and you can capture your own movements and apply it to characters in 3D software like Unity, Maya, 3ds Max, Motionbuilder or Blender. What kind of visual effects will we be able to create in the next ten years?
And the Visual Effects nominees are…
This year’s nominees are Ex Machina, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I hope The Martian wins. It’s ironic that the marketing for most of these nominated films was about how they were using practical effects, that films now a days have too much VFX and that consumers want realism. But take a look at the VFX showcase video below for The Martian and you’ll see that Oscar nominated VFX enhances practical effects and sets.
NOTE that if you have not seen the Martian yet this video CONTAINS SPOILERS
